Some times you are marked on the quality of the learning that you perform outside of the placement hours (self study / independent study). It is well known that it can be an awkward situation trying to show a clinical educator/mentor that you have taken it upon yourself to research a topic without it feeling like you are 'showing off'.

You may find yourself in this situation and there are a number of things you can do.

1. Have an informal discussion with your mentor and ask how they would like you to show your learning. They may find it as awkward to ask as you do!

2. Set the expectations early. As part of your induction or goal setting discussions ensure you ask what your educator expects from you in terms of independent study or reflections.

3. Consider different ways to communicate. Not every student learns in the same way, therefore there will also be a number of ways that you can demonstrate this with your mentor.

- Written work (electronic or paper)

- Journal article discussion

- Mind maps and diagrams (many student learn in this way and you can copy it and bring it in)

- Short presentation to the team

- Email summary for your mentor to catch up with at their convenience

- Video blog, waiting in their email box the next morning

- quiz questions

4. Agree a time in the day where you can demonstrate your learning/work, it may seem like it is always busy and never the right time to sit down and talk. Scheduling this in to the day or week is a good way to have protected time to demonstrate this.
